Dr. Jack G Shaheen dedicated his life to the Arab-America community through his commitment to scholarship and advocacy. ADC was honored when he decided to partner with us to inaugurate the Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarship Awards. Since 1998, the Scholarship was been awarded to several promising Arab-American students. Click here to register for the Convention.

Dr. Shaheen was peerless in his efforts to better the image of Arabs and Muslim. His legacy includes the largest archive of media, books, posters, and toys depicting Arabs, which he donated to New York University. His book and documentary Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People serves as the most thorough catalog of American cinema’s depiction of the Arab people, research he supplemented with The TV Arab. Dr. Shaheen knew it wasn’t enough to document prejudice; we have to combat it, too. In what the Los Angeles Times called “a rare instance of a major studio changing a film after its release,” Dr. Shaheen convinced Disney to change offensive lyrics to the song “Arabian Nights” in its animated film Aladdin.

Humble and generous, and always ready with a laugh, Dr. Shaheen exemplified the best of what our community can achieve when we work together. With his passing, we have lost one of our torchbearers. May his memory be a blessing.
