Mobile application empowers mobile users to become civil rights activists

DEARBORN ― April 11, 2014 ―In commemoration of the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Michigan (ADC-Michigan) developed its Civil Rights Action App.  This mobile app was created to help empower communities to create social change on an individual level. The App gives constituents the power to report instances of discrimination, ethnic harassment, and other forms of bigotry to the organization instantly from their mobile devices.

In addition to giving users a pipeline to communicate swiftly with the ADC-Michigan, the app guides users through their legal rights in the workplace, while traveling, and when interacting with federal agents. Users can also find and share news stories and ADC alerts through the app, which interfaces with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

“This app is truly unique among civil rights organizations,” explains Attorney Fatina Abdrabboh, Director of ADC-Michigan. “By providing a platform to engage through mobile technology and social media, we’re continuing on our mission to empower the margins and promote inclusion in all spheres of society. The best thing about this app is that all you need is a phone to mobilize civil rights advocacy in your community, no matter your proximity to our offices.”

The ADC-Michigan’s Civil Rights Action App is available for free on iOS and Android devices Friday April 11, 2014.  In a continued effort to embrace innovation, the ADC-Michigan is currently developing other creative tools to revolutionize civil rights engagement.
