Washington, DC | www.adc.org | April 13, 2024 – The Biden administration’s unwillingness to end Israel’s six month long genocide in Gaza and the complete disregard for United States and international law, is a major reason for the dangerous escalation in the region this evening. Longstanding U.S. policy of impunity & unconditional support for Israel is what has brought us to the brink of a much larger, and very deadly regional war. Enabling Israel’s genocide & regional hubris beyond Gaza is walking the region into total devastation.
Israel and the U.S. have been determined to ignite a larger regional war for decades. By attacking sovereign Arab nations they have made their intentions of destabilizing the whole region very clear. Targeting the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus, was a deliberate and intentional escalation with a complete understanding of the possible ramifications.
ADC Executive Director Abed Ayoub said, “The United States’ unwavering support for Israel, even during an ongoing genocide, not only undermines its credibility but also portrays it as weak on the global stage. A stance of unconditional support without accountability makes the U.S. complicit and ineffective in advocating for international norms and justice. At a time when courageous leadership is most needed, the U.S. has never been weaker on a global stage.”
Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus was a clear violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. Israel has proven to be a rogue genocidal state violating every norm of International law. Any framing that justifies their attack on the consulate, and labels the countermeasures by Iran as “unprovoked” is willfully supporting Israeli propaganda.
The U.S. plays a critical role in ensuring this does not escalate into a much larger war. The Israeli government clearly hopes the U.S. will fall in line and give it the cover, protection and weapons needed to intensify attacks directly on Iranian territory, and on neighboring countries, including Lebanon. The Biden Administration must reverse course on its handling of the ongoing genocide and demand an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire. Furthermore, the Administration must halt all weapons sales to Israel immediately.
As Israel continues to slaughter Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, it is desperate to change the narrative and be seen as a victim. This comes after two days of vicious attacks on Palestinian towns and villages by thousands of armed Israeli settlers under the protection of Israeli soldiers, killing at least two Palestinians (one of whom a child), burning and destroying at least 70 homes and property in the West Bank and continuing their ethnic cleansing agenda on all fronts.
We must not lose focus or fall for Israeli and U.S. propaganda that empowers their imperialist and settler-colonialist narrative. Free Palestine.
