Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib Introduces Resolution Recognizing the Nakba

Washington, D.C. | adc.org | May 15, 2023 – Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), the only Palestinian American serving in Congress, has reintroduced her resolution recognizing the ongoing Nakba and Palestinian refugee rights. As we mark the 75th year since the beginning of the Palestinian Nakba, this resolution, H.Res. 388, is an important step in acknowledging the consequences of establishing a country on land already inhabited. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) encourages all its members to contact their elected representatives to urge them to co-sponsor this resolution.

Israel’s creation resulted in the deliberate national dispossession of the Palestinian people. More than 75% of all Palestinians who lived in what became Israel became refugees, driven from their homes by Israeli militias and not allowed to return. In addition, Israel destroyed over 400 Palestinian villages and expropriated the property of Palestinian refugees.

However, the Nakba is not just a historical event, but rather an ongoing process of Israeli settler-colonialism inflicted on the Palestinian people, robbing them of their land and making them homeless through the destruction of their houses and the building of Israeli-only settlements in their place.

In conjunction with the introduction of her resolution, Congresswoman Tlaib hosted a blockbuster event on Capitol Hill dedicated to educating and remembering the Nakba. Despite House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s ironic attempt to dispossess Palestinians of a space to hold the event, it was an incredible and emotional night focused on telling the Palestinian story.
