Washington, D.C. | The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) congratulates the Catholic community on the election of a historic new Pope. Earlier today, Cardinal Robert Prevost became Pope Leo XIV. As the first American Pope, his appointment marks a moment with deep significance for Catholics in the United States, including Arab Americans, and around the world. His leadership can shape moral clarity at a time when humanity faces enormous tests of conscience.
Pope Leo XIV’s alignment with the vision and legacy of Pope Francis is reassuring. Pope Francis never relented and showed a moral consistency rarely seen among world leaders today. He fearlessly stood with the voiceless, defended immigrants, and spoke boldly for the people of Palestine. He called Gaza’s Holy Family Church every single day since the start of the genocide, offering strength and solidarity to Christians seeking refuge. His actions embodied the Church’s mission to walk with the suffering.
We urge Pope Leo XIV to carry forward the same commitments Pope Francis had, and to stand with the people of Palestine and all those in harm’s way.
In his first address, Pope Leo XIV honored his predecessor as “always courageous,” and urged the world to “build bridges” and “build dialogue.” He reminded us that “we must all be a single people living in peace,” and called on humanity to “walk together… to that land God has prepared us for.”
This message of peace comes at a moment of deep crisis. Gaza continues to suffer through the worst days of its 579-day long genocide. Israel’s blockade has choked off food, water, and medical aid. Children face starvation, and entire families struggle to survive with no access to basic necessities. In this urgent hour, global leaders must not look away—they must act.
The Church has an important and defining role in defending dignity, ending violence, and calling the world to justice. ADC stands ready to support that mission as we uplift the voices of the oppressed.
