Washington, DC | www.adc.org | November 21, 2024 – This evening, a record number 19 Senators voted to block the sale of tank shells, mortars, and guided missile kits to Israel, aiming to halt the ongoing US-sponsored genocide in Palestine. While the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval did not receive enough votes to pass the Senate, this unprecedented vote itself highlights the impact of our collective voices in forcing this conversation. Our advocacy has spurred a growing coalition of Senators and Representatives to speak out publicly on cutting off arms sales and transfers to Israel – a topic once championed by only a few brave elected officials.
ADC Executive Director Abed Ayoub said, “Tonight’s historic vote is a testament to the growing courage within Congress to challenge the destructive status quo. We thank Senators Sanders, Van Hollen, and all 19 Senators who stood boldly in the face of immense pressure to prioritize U.S. and international law, justice, and humanity over a militarized foreign policy that is at odds with the will of the American people, as evidenced in the presidential election. This destructive status quo has not only divided our nation, but also isolated the United States in the international community, eroding our standing as a global advocate for human rights. The ADC remains steadfast in our calls to end the genocide in Palestine and to halt U.S. weapons sales worldwide. We can no longer defend policies that destabilize entire regions for economic and military gain, while destroying countless lives and erasing generations. This vote is only the beginning, and we will continue to demand accountability and a foreign policy rooted in respect for the law, human rights and dignity.”
Now is not the time to sit back and let up the pressure. Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on its resurrected bill granting the White House unchecked power to shut down nonprofits – including social justice groups, media organizations, universities, and civil liberties organizations – based unilaterally on accusations without due process. ADC is demanding that Members of Congress vote NO on H.R. 9495, and we need you to join us. Even if you’ve already sent a message, send one again. Your voice has the power to make a difference.
