Washington, DC | www.adc.org | June 6, 2022| The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is proud announce that the “Voices of Courage” Award will be presented to Amnesty International USA at the ADC 2022 Convention Gala. This award is presented to an organization or individual that has demonstrated strength and courage in preserving dignity and human rights for oppressed people. Amnesty has shown profound courage with their report on apartheid in Occupied Palestine, released in February of this year.
The comprehensive report, Israel’s Apartheid Against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime Against Humanity, documents human rights violations – including seizures of Palestinian land and property, unlawful killings, forcible transfer, drastic movement restrictions, and the denial of nationality and citizenship to Palestinians – that together constitute a system of apartheid under international law.
Amnesty has shown that they are steadfast allies with the Palestinian community, and we welcome all to join us as we celebrate and honor their work at our National Gala!
Along with the award, Amnesty USA director Paul O’Brien will join our program as a featured speaker for the evening. Mr. O’Brien joined ADC in February for an important webinar on the newly released report, and we are excited to hear him speak at our gala about the ways we can all work together to promote liberty and human rights for Palestinians.

About the Awardee:
Amnesty International is a global movement of millions of people demanding human rights for all people – no matter who they are or where they are. They are the world’s largest grassroots human rights organization. In recent years, Amnesty International has focused on protecting human rights in the global refugee crisis. In the United States, they’ve been on the ground in Ferguson, Baltimore, and other communities affected by police-related violence, and published a groundbreaking report calling for reform of laws governing the use of lethal force by police. That report has helped spark local, state, and federal reforms in the United States.
About the Speaker:
Paul O’Brien is the new Executive Director at Amnesty International USA, based in Washington, DC. Previously, Paul was at Oxfam America. During the pandemic, Paul co-led Oxfam’s worldwide influencing network’s efforts to change government policies, corporate practice and public opinion. For the last decade, he oversaw Oxfam America’s advocacy with the US government and corporations. He has been an advisor to the President of Afghanistan, the Africa Policy Advisor for CARE, and an organizer in Nairobi’s informal urban settlements. He co-founded a community organizing institution in Kenya and a human rights research consortium in Afghanistan. He was the President of the Echoing Green Foundation, a litigator in New York for Cravath, Swaine and Moore.
