Tell Congress: Oppose the “Sharia-Free America Caucus”

A group of anti-Muslim lawmakers in Congress—led by Congressmen Randy Fine, Chip Roy, and Keith Self—has launched the so-called “Sharia-Free America Caucus,” an initiative aimed at advancing legislation that singles out Islam and Muslim communities under the false premise that Muslims threaten the U.S. legal system.

The caucus is being promoted by members who have repeatedly trafficked in anti-Muslim rhetoric and policies, and lawmakers are now being asked to decide whether they will stand against this discriminatory effort.

ADC is urging members of Congress to sign a Dear Colleague letter led by Representatives James E. Clyburn, André Carson, Jerrold Nadler, Rosa DeLauro, Hank Johnson, and Ro Khanna opposing this effort and reaffirming a basic constitutional principle:

The government cannot single out a religion for disfavored treatment.

“Sharia” is being deliberately distorted to create fear and justify harmful proposals. Sharia refers to how many Muslims practice their faith in daily life. It is not a competing legal system, and it does not replace U.S. law.

Courts have already rejected this approach. When Oklahoma attempted a similar measure, it was struck down in Awad v. Ziriax for violating the Constitution.

This effort is part of a broader push to normalize singling out Muslims in public policy. Once lawmakers are allowed to treat one faith as suspect, it sets a dangerous precedent that puts everyone’s rights at risk.
