Washington D.C. | The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) condemns Secretary Marco Rubio’s recent announcement to revoke existing visas and block the issuance of any future visa for South Sudanese passport holders. This decision is troubling because it imposes a sweeping penalty on an entire population. Punishing a whole group for a disputed case undermines our legal principles and creates harmful precedents for U.S. immigration policy.
Blanket actions that hinge on executive decisions alone diminish the checks and balances our government depends on. Immigration policies with far-reaching impacts must reflect due process. Everyone—immigrant or otherwise—deserves a fair chance to defend their rights in court. Policies that deny this process not only risk wrongful harm to innocent people, but they also concentrate disproportionate power in the executive branch.
ADC urges the administration to reconsider this measure and to work within existing legal frameworks to resolve repatriation disputes. We must not jeopardize constructive diplomatic relationships or the well-being of vulnerable populations by acting in haste. Immigration decisions should be specific, evidence-based, and crafted in a way that respects both national security and the fundamental rights of individuals.
