Action Alert: ADC Voter Protection Unit Calls for Election Monitors

Volunteers Needed in VA, PA, FL, OH, and MI by Wednesday October 29th
Washington, DC | October 24, 2008 | www.adc.org | As Election Day quickly approaches, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee‘s Voter Protection Unit (ADC-VPU) is calling for volunteers to make a difference and help protect the rights of all voters. The VPU needs the assistance of those willing and available to become Election Monitors. Please e-mail your information; including your name, email address, phone number, and voting district to vpu@adc.org. Upon receiving your information a member of the VPU will be in touch with you to explain the process.
How can you volunteer?
* The first step is to contact the ADC-VPU at vpu@adc.org by Wednesday, October 29, 2008.
* The VPU will provide you with the necessary training material and detailed steps about the duties of an election monitor and how those duties can be performed.
* When contacting the VPU please include your voting district.
Where?
* Election Monitors are needed in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio and Michigan.
* Election Monitors will be placed in polling sites in their voting district.
What is expected of me?
Election Monitor District Representative:
* Will serve as the go-to person to election monitors across a voting district.
* Responsible for contacting the City or County Clerk should an issue arise.
* Set schedules across a district and be responsible for strategically placing monitors.
* Responsible for reporting to the ADC-VPU on the day‘s activities.
* Someone familiar with election monitoring, organized, familiar with the voting district.
Election Monitor:
* Primary responsibility will be to ensure the fairness of the election process.
* Will be placed at a polling station by the District Representative.
* Will be given specific instructions on what to look for on Election Day.
* Will be provided instructions on how to report any acts of voter intimidation
* Willing to commit to a 3-4 hour block and have be able to carry out the duties.
Is there training involved?
* ADC-VPU will forward all interested parties training material via e-mail before the elections.
* On the evening of Wednesday October 29, the ADC-VPU will hold a mandatory conference call for all volunteers.
* During the call all specific details and instructions will be provided. You will also have the opportunity to ask members of the VPU questions about the process.
