Washington, D.C. | The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) commends the 27 U.S. Senators who cast a principled vote last night in support of Senator Bernie Sanders’ Joint Resolutions of Disapproval (S.J.Res. 34 and S.J.Res. 41). These resolutions aimed to halt a $675 million sale of 1,000-pound bombs, thousands of Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, and tens of thousands of fully automatic assault rifles destined for Israel. Although the measures were defeated 70-27, these senators demonstrated moral clarity in confronting the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

“These 27 senators demonstrated the moral clarity and political courage that this critical moment demands,” said Abed Ayoub, ADC National Executive Director. “Their votes sent a powerful message that humanity, justice, and international law must prevail over political expediency.”

ADC thanks the following senators for taking one positive step toward ending the worst genocide in recent memory, once and for all: Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ), Sen. Angus King (I-ME), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT), and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).

Since October 2023, nearly 60,000 Palestinian deaths and more than 143,000 injuries have been recorded – the real number will never be known. A report by The Lancet suggests the actual mortality rate in Gaza may be underreported by approximately 41%. Additionally, about 1.9 million people—over 90% of Gaza’s population—have been displaced, and the entire population currently faces a man-made famine imposed by Israel.

“Despite this devastating reality, the Senate majority refused to break with an extremist Israeli government responsible for leveling the Gaza strip, deliberately starving civilians, and disregarding repeated rulings from international courts,” Ayoub concluded.

ADC is particularly disappointed by the votes of every Democrat and Republican senator who represent states whose own constituents—American citizens—have been victims of Israeli military and settler violence.

ADC calls on Americans of conscience to demand an immediate end to all military aid to Israel, insist on the full opening of Gaza’s crossings to urgently needed humanitarian assistance, and support international accountability for Israeli officials and any U.S. actors who enable their crimes.

Nearly three years into the worst genocide of the modern era, millions of Palestinians face imminent death due to Israel’s actions. History will remember those who stood firmly against genocide—and those who chose complicity. We will never forget.
