2022 World Cup Marks Historic Moment for Qatar, Arabs

Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | November 20, 2022 – Starting today, the Arab world will be the center of the sports’ universe. Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup marks the first time the biggest sporting event in the world will be held in the Arab World, a landmark moment for the nation and the Arab World at large.

The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) congratulates Qatar for this historic moment. We are certain that Qatar will not only convene a vibrant and successful World Cup, but it will do so in fashion that will highlight the rich culture of the Arab world and the esteemed history of the broader region. This moment is one of great pride for Arabs all over the world, and indeed, the millions of Arab Americans that will be traveling to Qatar and watching the matches and the revelry from home.

The great African author Chinua Achebe wrote, “Until the lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunter.” Qatar has risen up as our lion, ready to write history for Arabs and Africans, Palestinians and all peoples whose voices have been silenced by foreign pens, and tales buried under the sands of hegemony. The 2022 World Cup, played atop Arab lands and curated by our hands, reverses the tide of history, and provides a platform where Arab cultures are glorified, Islam is uplifted, and the entire Arab World a topic of sporting valor instead of war.

ADC National Chairman Dr. Safa Rifka states, “This is a proud day for Arabs across the world, and we extend a congratulations to Qatar. There is no doubt they will do a phenomenal job at showcasing to the world our rich Arab heritage and traditions.”

ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub states, “Qatar occupies the heart of the world. Despite attempts to derail this landmark moment, the next thirty days will fill the hearts of Arabs in the United States, and beyond it, with pride and passion. We commend our friends in Qatar, and are certain that they will hold one of the greatest World Cup ever.”

The significance of this World Cup will far exceed the month by which it is played. It is history rewritten, which will raise the heads of our children, uplift the spirits of our elders, and chart a new direction for Arab peoples – all over the world – to claim their position as champions. Today, tomorrow and onward.
