Celebrate the Achievements of young Arab-Americans: The 2014 Jack G. Shaheen Scholarship Awards
Washington, D.C. | www.adc.org | June 11, 2014 – The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee invites you to celebrate the achievements of young Arab-Americans as they receive their Jack Shaheen Scholarship Awards from Dr. Jack Shaheen himself. This is the seventeenth consecutive year that the scholarships have been awarded to college students majoring in journalism, radio,and television. The 2014 Jack G. Shaheen awards will be presented on Friday, June 13th at 8:15 P.M. at the ADC National Convention.
The purpose of the Jack G. Shaheen Mass Communications Scholarships is to honor Arab-American students who excel in media studies. Graduate students and college juniors and seniors majoring in journalism, radio, television, and/or film are eligible for the scholarships. This year’s Jack Shaheen Scholarships will be awarded to Nadine Sebai and Joseph Khalil.
Dr. Shaheen is an internationally recognized author and media critic who wrote the award-winning book and film, Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People. He has consulted with the United Nations and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and has been featured on numerous national network programs such as National Public Radio, CNN, MSNBC and The Today Show.
About the awardees:
Nadine Sebai is an accountant and analyst from Miami, Florida. Beginning in Fall 2014, Nadine will be attending the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism program and will specialize in in-depth stories on the environment. This summer she will be working as a production assistant for the Investigative Reporting Program in Berkeley, California.
Joseph Khalil is a reporter at WLNS TV-6, the CBS news station in Lansing, Michigan. A 2012 graduate of Michigan State with a background in journalism and international relations background, Joe is leaving the television news business for 10 months to complete a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York City. With an advanced degree, Joe hopes to one day work as a network journalist, covering stories of national and international importance.
