ADC: Call Congress to Support Delegation’s Investigation of Iraq Sanctions Policy
Five congressional aides from the House of Representatives left Friday on an independent fact-finding mission to Iraq. ADC, one of the co-sponsors of the delegation, applauds the five members of Congress whose aides are participating in the delegation. If your congressional office is not part of the delegation, call the trip to their attention, ask them to meet with the delegation when it returns, and begin the process of rethinking the sanctions policy.
The congressional offices participating in the delegation are: Rep.
Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Rep. Sam Gejdenson (D-CT), Rep. Earl F. Hilliard
(D-AL), Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), and Rep. Bernard Sanders (I-VT).
McKinney and Davis are members of the House International Relations Committee; Gejdenson is the Ranking Minority Member. The congressional staffers are accompanied by Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies.
The congressional delegation left despite the opposition of the State Department. They will examine the effect of nine years of economic sanctions on the civilian population, Iraqi government policy, and U.S. economic and strategic interests, including the possibility of U.S. grain sales to Iraq. They will also study the effects of depleted uranium, which has damaged the health of U.S. veterans and Iraqi civilians, and the escalation of the U.S. bombing campaign.
