UN Security Council’s Failures Demand Adoption of
 “Uniting for Peace” Resolution (377A)

Washington, D.C. | Given the inaction of the UN Security Council, crippled by political divisions and unable to fulfill its primary mission to prevent genocide, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) urgently calls on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to invoke the “Uniting for Peace” Resolution (377A).

Resolution 377A enables the UN General Assembly to act decisively when the Security Council fails due to lack of unanimity among its permanent members. The resolution empowers the General Assembly to convene an emergency session through the Secretary-General and recommend collective measures, including the potential use of force, to restore international peace and security. Historically, this resolution has been utilized effectively in crises such as the Korean War, Congo, and the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.

“The Security Council has repeatedly failed to pass a ceasefire resolution due to obstruction by the United States, exacerbated by Israel’s ongoing sabotage of America’s peace efforts,” said ADC National Executive Director, Abed Ayoub. “A minority cannot continue to paralyze the will of the majority, who demand an immediate end to the genocide in Gaza and immediate humanitarian relief to its people.”

ADC emphasizes that the General Assembly must now assert itself, taking proactive steps to end the catastrophic humanitarian crisis and genocide occurring in Gaza and the West Bank. If the General Assembly cannot intervene decisively to halt these atrocities, its very existence and purpose must be questioned.

The world is witnessing a severe moral and humanitarian failure. The ADC calls on Secretary-General Guterres and the international community to act immediately under Resolution 377A. It is imperative that decisive, collective action replace political gridlock to stop past, present, and future genocides.
