ADC Welcomes the Administration’s Rejection of Anti-Islam Bigotry

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) welcomes comments from President Bush and Secretary of State Powell that distance the Administration from continuing anti-Islam remarks made by several evangelical leaders.
President Bush remarked yesterday, at a meeting with Secretary-General Kofi Annan, that “Some of the comments that have been uttered about Islam do not reflect the sentiments of my government or the sentiments of most Americans.” more >
Today, Secretary Powell said, “This kind of hatred must be rejected. This kind of language must be spoken out against. We cannot allow this image to go forth of America because it is an inaccurate image of America. We are a welcoming nation, a nation that is a country of countries, touched by every country, and we touch every country in the world.” more >
In the past several months, leading evangelicals have launched a vicious and unrelenting attack on Islam and the Prophet Mohammed. ADC continues to urge religious leaders to repudiate all campaigns of defamation as this type of outright racism lays the groundwork for hate crimes, discrimination and intolerance.
