Today, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) announces Grammy Award-winning artist Macklemore as the recipient of its 2024 Rachel Corrie Award – a recognition given to an ally of the Palestinian cause. Macklemore will also be presented with a proclamation from the City of Dearborn by Mayor Abdullah Hammoud.
The Rachel Corrie Award is an annual honor given to an individual(s) who has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the rights of the Palestinian people and justice in Palestine. The award is named after Rachel Corrie, an American peace activist who was tragically killed by Israel in 2003 while standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Each year, ADC presents this award to those who exemplify the courage and compassion that Rachel embodied.
“For decades, and especially after the tragic events of October 7th, 2023, those who courageously stood for Palestine have faced fierce opposition—many sacrificing their careers, degrees, and platforms. Yet, in the face of such adversity, Macklemore’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people is a beacon of hope when too many voices remain silent,” said Abed A. Ayoub, ADC National Executive Director. “Macklemore’s steadfast commitment to justice and equality inspires us all, and it is with great honor that we present him with the Rachel Corrie Award, celebrating the vital role of allies who stand with us in the pursuit of peace and human dignity.”
Macklemore is the artist behind “Hind’s Hall” – a song in honor of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl murdered in Gaza by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). The song further highlights issues like police violence against peaceful protesters, the music industry’s silence on Israel’s war on Gaza, and U.S. complicity in the murder of thousands of Palestinians. All streaming proceeds of “Hind’s Hall” go to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
ADC’s National Arab American Convention, or ArabCon, will bring together scholars, activists, journalists, politicians, and other professionals from across the country and beyond. The conference will offer a moment to collectively organize the political power of the Arab-American community before this year’s critical election – one in which Arab-Americans intend to make their impact felt like never before.
