What’s Best for the Palestinians?

Washington, DC | www.adc.org | September 14, 2017 – The policy in support of a two-state peace deal as the proper agreement for the Arab-Israeli conflict is being challenged by a new generation of Palestinians and solidarity activists who argue that the Palestinian struggle is a civil rights battle for equal rights best resolved in a common state for Arabs and Jews. These individuals point to the transformation of Apartheid South Africa into a “Rainbow Nation” as a model path for Palestinians and Israelis, Israeli settlement construction that might proscrive a viable and independent Palestinian state, and the right-of-return of Palestinian refugees to what is now Israel. Conversely, proponents of continuing on the two-state approach argue that a two-state solution is a prerequisite for any one-state, that Palestinian interests are better served in their own state, and that it is foolhardy to go up against a formidable international consensus.

Nizar Farsakh is a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, an erstwhile General Director of the PLO delegation to Washington (2011 – 2013) and former advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team (2003 – 2008). A strong supporter of civic activism in the Middle East and North Africa, Farsakh directs Civil Society Partnerships at the Project on Middle East Democracy in Washington, D.C.
Amer Zahr
Arab-American comedian, speaker, writer and academic
Adjunct professor at University of Detroit Mercy School of Law
As an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, Amer Zahr lectures on politics, society, the Arab world, and Islam. As a comedian and speaker, he’s addressed packed houses at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Washington’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 2015, Zahr organized a comedy festival in Ramallah that attracted press attention from around the world.
Noura Erekat
Palestinian American legal scholar and human rights attorney
Assistant professor at New Century College, George Mason University
Noura Erakat earned her J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to her professorship at George Mason University, she served as Legal Counsel for the Domestic Policy Subcommittee on Oversight and Government Reform in the House of Representatives, New Voices Fellow at the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, and Legal Advocacy Coordinator for the Badil Center for Refugee and Residency Rights.
