New York Congressman and Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Peter King recently stated in an interview that in order to protect our country from terrorism we “should consider Middle Eastern ethnic background as a reason for further questioning.” The Republican representative made his comments to National Journals‘ Congress Daily PM on August 15, 2006 in response to the recently foiled terrorism plot in Britain allegedly being planned by several British citizens of South Asian descent. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has been on the forefront working against racial profiling since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. ADC opposes King‘s comments and supports Homeland Secretary Michael Chertoff‘s assertions that we must focus our efforts to prevent terrorism on suspicious patterns of behavior rather than limiting our scope to people‘s ethnicity.
