ADC President Samer Khalaf to Speak at Memorial Event at the American Club of Ramallah on Sunday

Washington, DC | www.adc.org | March 19, 2015 – The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) invites supporters in the DMV area to attend a memorial event this Sunday to commemorate the passing of the victims of the tragic Chapel Hill shooting.  ADC President Samer Khalaf will speak at the memorial, which will take place at 4:00PM to 6:00PM at the American Club of Ramallah in Vienna, VA. 

The Coalition of Palestinian American Organizations announced a series of memorial events in observance of the Arba’een, forty days after the passing of three of our community members who were tragically murdered on Tuesday, February 10th 2015 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The victims, Deah Barakat, 23, Yusor Mohammad Abu Salha, 21, and Razan Mohammad Abu Salha, 19 were active members of the community. Barakat was a student at the UNC School of Dentistry, where he was actively fundraising for a project to offer dental care to Syrian refugees in Turkey. His wife, Yusor was a prospective student at UNC’s dental school. Yusor’s sister, Razan AbuSalha, was a student at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

The loss of three of our community members in such a heinous manner is a tragedy to our entire community and to society at large. They were and will continue to be a living example for perseverance, hard work, service, citizenship, compassion, and excellence.

The memorial events hosted by the Coalition of Palestinian American Organizations will take place on Sunday, March 22nd 2015 in various U.S. cities as an opportunity to commemorate the lives of the victims.

Members of the Coalition of Palestinian American Organizations in the Washington, DC area will be hosting their memorial event at the American Club of Ramallah Palestinelocated at 2631 Chain Bridge Road, Vienna, Virginia 22181.

The event will take place from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm and is open to the general public. 

Speakers that afternoon will include: 

  • Ambassador Maen Rashid Areikat, Chief Representative of the PLO Delegation to the United States
  • Mr. Samer Khalaf Esq, National President of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee 
  • Mr. Bassam Eways, National President of the American Federation of Ramallah Palestine and 
  • Mr. Said Durrah, Islamic Relief USA

These nationwide services will serve as a space for the community to honor and reflect on the lives of Deah, Yusor and Razan; and also provide an opportunity for the community to come together and discuss a plan to act collectively in the pursuit of our civil rights as Muslim-Americans, Arab-Americans, and Palestinian-Americans.
