ADC Meets with CBP Leadership in Detroit, MI

Washington, D.C. | February 10, 2023 – The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) was recently invited to meet with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) – Detroit Field Office in Detroit, MI to address issues, concerns related to the Arab American community. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss positive changes CBP has made over the years to address concerns raised by community members.

ADC was represented by National Executive Director Mr. Abed Ayoub. CBP was represented by Director of Field Operations Christopher Perry; Port Director Devin Chamberlain; and Port Director Robert Larkin. At the meeting, representatives from CBP shared insightful information about their outreach initiatives, their processes, and their commitment to enhancing the traveler experience.

Attendees at the meeting stressed the value of open communication. Approaching each other in a frank, but respectful, manner demonstrated that progress is possible. Following the meeting, ADC and CBP Detroit committed to continued engagement and to cooperate in finding answers to issues raised.

ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub said, “The meeting demonstrated how open communication and respect can result in workable solutions for challenging problems. There is potential for a stronger partnership between the Arab American community and CBP that will foster understanding and constructive change thanks to our commitment to carrying on this discussion and cooperating to address issues. Some of the policies and practices implemented by CBP Detroit can be used as a model in other cities across the country.”

This meeting serves as an example of how government institutions and organizations can collaborate to address crucial problems, bring about positive change, and foster understanding. Both parties are committed to improving CBP practices in the state of Michigan, particularly in Detroit.
