Protect Vulnerable Immigrants from Deportation!
Washington, DC | www.adc.org | November 20, 2017 – For 25 years, there has been bipartisan support for Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for refugees and migrants from conflict zones. But now the Trump administration is threatening to revoke TPS status for 300,000 people. Already the administration has terminated TPS for 1,000 Sudanese and 2,500 Nicaraguans. It is reported that 50,000 Haitians are next to be deported, which would force them to return to a country facing a cholera epidemic and food insecurity after the 2010 earthquake and recovery efforts that have been setback after Haiti was hit with three consecutive hurricanes this season.
ACT NOW TO DEFEND TPS IMMIGRANTS
68,000 TPS recipients came to the U.S. as children, and roughly 273,000 U.S.-born children have a parent with TPS status. This is not just a humanitarian concern; it is also detrimental to the American economy. Ending TPS would cut $45.2 billion in GDP and a loss of $6.9 billion in Social Security and Medicare contributions. Many TPS recipients would be forced back to home countries embroiled in civil war, domestic violence and humanitarian and natural catastrophes in Syria, Yemen, South Sudan, and several other Arab, African and Latin American nations. Because TPS recipients do not have traditional immigration status, they are held hostage to the whims of the Trump administration. But Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (D-NY) is determined to come to their aid with a bipartisan bill that would provide relief to all TPS beneficiaries.
The Aspire TPS Act (Act to Sustain the Protection of Immigrant Residents Earned through TPS) would allow every TPS eligible individual to apply for Lawful Permanent Resident Status if they could demonstrate hardship. Those who have been in the U.S. for 5 years or more would receive a new “protected” status for renewable 6 year periods.
