ACC Celebrates ‘Women of Achievement’ in Michigan

Oakar to Receive ‘Civil Rights Award‘

Hon. Mary Rose Oakar, President of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), will be receiving the American and Chaldean Council (ACC) 2005 ‘Civil Rights Award‘ for her work and dedication in the area of civil rights. Oakar will receive the award at ACC‘s 26th Annual Civic and Humanitarian Awards Gala on Saturday, September 24, in Detroit, Michigan at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center.
ACC‘s Gala will attract more than 1500 guests, including leaders representing national and state policy-making, members of the judiciary, leaders of the corporate world and health care industries, and educational institutions and foundations. Other honoree include: Jane Arraf, CNN‘s Senior Baghdad Correspondent; Mary Sue Coleman, President, University of Michigan; Helen Daoud, Philanthropist; Irma Elder, President/CEO of Elder Automotive Group; Barbara Farrah, State Representative, Michigan; Maya Hammoud, University of Michigan; Pricilla Khoury, Member of the Board of Director, ACC; Captain Katrina Mathews, Salvation Army; Iman Mohamed, Medical College of Ohio; and Nida Samona, Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
ACC is recognized as the largest human services organization serving the needs of the Arab and Chaldean population. They offer programs to assist the newly arrived immigrants adjust to their new environment. They also serve over 80,000 clients annually with over 50 specialized services. The programs offered by ACC include state sponsored Workfirst and Placement programs, Behavioral Health, Public and Primary Health Care, Cultural Tapestry, and Youth Centered Enrichment and Leadership Programs.
ACC was founded in 1979 in Michigan and is the largest community based, human service organization assisting the Middle Eastern communities in the U.S., providing services specifically tailored for this unique population. ACC will mark this year 26 years of dedicated human services for its local communities and determination to making a difference as a leading educational, employment and health care human services organizations.
